Free Energy
The latest issue of the Rolling Stone magazine has a feature about the best new bands of 2010. “Free Energy”, Rolling Stone comments are “Philly power poppers who mine the best of glammy Seventies-style arena jams on their James Murphy-produced debut Stuck on Nothing.” Interesting description – but if you were looking for a reincarnation of AC DC or Led Zeppelin you’d be disappointed. What I hear more here is a rather bland version of Weezer, or The Killers (Mr Brightside), particularly in this single that reuses the band’s name. “Free Energy” are rather lacking in energy, I would have loved to find a song on their album reminiscent to Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” but I alas, didn’t. But I do like their debut album, “Stuck on Nothing” – it is very retro and filled with Summertime Power-Pop Rockiness. I just don’t like it enough to praise the band as one of the best new bands for this year. Hopefully I will be proven wrong and the record will grow on me, or maybe Free Energy will follow up with a sophomore album that kicks the socks off of this record. We shall wait and see.
