1964 Thunderbird: Fun, Fun, Fun
“Fun, Fun, Fun” was a 1964 hit single written by two of the The Beach Boys band members, Brian Wilson and Mike Love. It is a true story. The band, visiting the KNAK radio station in Salt Lake City, Utah, overhead a complaint from the daughter of the owner of the station, and were inspired to write this song. The daughter, Shirley England, had borrowed her father’s Thunderbird to “go study” at the library. Wrong move! Instead, she ended up at an hamburger stand, and news of her mischievous walkabout eventually got back to her father, who thereby took away her driving privileges.
I remember commenting on a previous Chuck Berry song, “Chuck Berry: Sweet Little Sixteen” how Berry’s music were almost identical to The Beach Boys 1963 hit “Surfin’ U.S.A.”. Well, the Beach Boys stole another piece of Berry’s guitar work – the opening introduction here is based off of “Johnny B. Goode”, a 1958 song. I do not believe there were any credit disputes with “Fun, Fun, Fun”, perhaps Berry was happy with the settlement reached with “Surfin’ U.S.A”
Chuck Berry was indeed the Godfather for The Beach Boys.
