Following on from yesterday’s post, The Cranberries are another band that were prominent in the 1990’s with a string of hits that included “Linger”, “Dreams” and “Free to Decide”. Starting out in Limerick, Ireland in 1989 with the name “The Cranberry Saw Us”, the band quickly shortened their name and their debut album “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?”, heavily tinted with Celtic Rock was an instant success. The mood of music became darker on their sophomore record, “No Need to Argue” as the single, “Zombie” shows.
“Zombie”, was written by lead singer Dolores O’Riordan as a protest song against the political and violent struggles in Northern Ireland. It contains a grunge-like guitar riff, a departure from the gentle and soothing harmonies typical of other songs by The Cranberries.
