The White Stripes
This is one of the few ‘love’ songs by Jack White of The White Stripes. Suzy Lee is heavily influenced by early Blues music, and you could almost imagine Led Zeppelin creating this song in the late 60’s… yes, this is the era this song belongs to. The White Stripes, a duo consisting of Jack and Meg White are a Garage Rock band from Detroit, and their self titled debut album that was released in 1999 cries out Detroit Blues-Rock like no other album can. I can’t help but link the White Stripes to previously mentioned Led Zeppelin, as well as The Doors when I listen to this record/
Jack White, previously Jack Gillis married Megan White in 1996, taking her surname. They would go on to form the White Stripes. However, the couple divorced in 2000, prior to when the band would become world-famous. Before the details of The White’s marriage and divorce became common knowledge, the band would continuously tell media they were siblings – a brother and sister relationship – maybe they did this as an attempt to hide their true relationship and to attempt to keep all reporting on musical matters alone.
Suzy Lee, an unknown person, appears several times throughout The White Stripes catalog of songs. On this track, “Suzy Lee”, and again on “We’re Going to be Friends” – the song that became the introduction sequence to the comedy film “Napolean Dynamite”. The video below is not taken from the movie, but it does feature some pretty sweet drawings of ligers and other mythical creatures. Gosh!
