Flash! A-ahhhh! He'll save every one of us!
At the risk of my manhood, I am ready to admit I secretly like this movie. “Flash Gordon”, (did you know he is the savior of the Universe and King of the impossible) is a 1980 science fiction movie, based off of a comic strip, written in part by Lorenzo Semple, Jr. – the same guy that was responsible for writing the original Batman movie. That explains the camp approach to the script, and the fact that the score is composed by Queen only adds this. When released, the movie was a flop at the box office in most countries – the U.K. being an exception, where Flash Gordon remains as one of the top 100 films of all time (when adjusted for inflation). Flash Gordon has since gone on to achieve a cult status, similar to the original Batman movie I earlier mentioned. The question remains, is Flash Gordon one of the best bad movies there is, and does it qualify for a Dante’s Peak rating?
