Elvis would have been 75 this last week. Elvis Presley that is. But let us not forget that other Elvis, Declan Patrick MacManus, born in London in 1954. Known for his thickly rimmed spectacles, it can be argued that he was more musically gifted than Presley. Bursting on to the British Punk explosion in the late 70’s, Costello started out as an angry Buddy Holly, and he has experimented with various genres of music throughout his career, ranging from soul and reggae to orchestral and classical. Maybe this diversity in music is what has kept me distant from Elvis Costello, because before last week I had never listened to a full album of his. I broke this deadlock by listening to Costello’s first two releases, “My AIm is True” and “This Year’s Model” (released 1977/1978). Pump it Up, with it’s punk-infused bass line is the highlight of This Year’s Model.
