New Year's Day
Could I have chosen a more obvious song for today than U2’s classic song, “New Year’s Day”? The song was the third track of their third album, War, and was released as a single in 1983. The song is written about the Polish Solidarity movement, and the anti-communist feeling that grew during the early 80’s in Poland.
New Year’s Day is a classic U2 song and was popular amongst fans – it was the first single by U2 to reach the top 10 in the UK Charts, showing that you didn’t need a 3-minute pop tune to find success in the charts. It also paved the way for U2 to gain an audience for their often politically-themed songs, a theme the band has continued to call upon whenever they want to highlight an issue in the World (Northern Ireland, war, dictatorship, famine, oppression).
