Handel's Messiah premiered in Dublin
George Frideric Handel’s Messiah is an English oratorio composed in 1741 and is his most famous creation. Handel was a German-born, Italian trained and a resident of London at the time of writing Messiah (he would become a naturalized Englishman). He chose to premier Messiah in Dublin, Ireland on 13 April 1742. Dublin at the time was a flourishing city with a wealthy and culturally-accepting audience – Handle had had a poor reception the previous year in London and did not want a repeat performance. He need not worry, Messiah was received with raving reviews in Dublin, and to any subsequent city that the music was introduced to, including London’s critical audience.
I just realize that this song is performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir – it’s second showing in a week, following the post from a couple of days ago, Gabriel’s Message. (This is not intentional, I had reserved this video several weeks ago for use on this day!) I strongly recommend anyone sitting around the Christmas Tree tomorrow morning to grab a copy of Handel’s Messiah, and have it playing in the background whilst you partake n your gift-giving and opening with your family. Have a very blessed Christmas!
I’m going to take a few days off from posting, I need a little time to play with my Christmas toys! But, I will be back, ready for the New Year! I hope all my regular readers have been enjoying my posts, it has been a fun project for me personally, and I am having a lot enjoyment in discovering new music, rediscovering old music I had forgotten about, and amusing myself with some of the sillier songs that are out there.
