I thought my eyes were failing me when I found this. Weezer? Singing Christmas Hymns? Yes, such an album exists, and was released last year as part of a soundtrack for an iPhone game, Tapulous. From the Tapulous website:
Christmas With Weezer is a cheerful music beat game from the makers of Tap Tap Revenge, featuring exclusive holiday songs performed by everyone’s favorite rock band, Weezer.
Because of this, Weezer’s version of O Come All Ye Faithful is rather bland, and doesn’t capture the magic and emotions found in the words of this joyous hymn. I listen to this and I don’t get that feeling of joy or triumph, like I would if I had a Church Organist and choir bellowing out this hymn. I’m not sure why Weezer agreed to take part in this project – surely they could have added in a little bit of creativity, though I do applaud a popular band for unapologetically singing songs about Christ. Tradition and a reminder of what Christmas means at this time of year needs to be at the forefront of all our thoughts and actions.
