Trepak, or, the Russian Dance, is part of the Nutcracker ballet, which was composed by Tchaikovsky in 1891-1892. This particular scene, The Russian Dance (or Trepak) is full of traditional Russian and Ukrainian folk music. It appears in the second act of the ballet, when the Sugar Plum Fairy takes Clara to the Land of Sweets where she is witness to a series of ethnic dances, including Tea (China) and Coffee (Arabia). Although I am not an admirer of men prancing around in lycra (otherwise known as ballet), I do consider myself having a little bit of culture, and I did see the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra perform Nutcracker a couple of years ago. One of the perks of my job is that occasionally we are presented with free tickets or passes to various events in and around the city. Of course, I like to take full advantage!

Although the ballet is not necessarily a Christmas performance, it has become the preferred option to show the Nutcracker at this time of year. The nutcracker doll was initially used for it’s name’s purpose – to crack nuts. However, more modern nutcrackers serve a decorative purpose for the Christmas season.
