Hanukkah starts today
Enter Neil Diamond. Diamond (he is Jewish), stepped forward and released a Christmas album this year, rather like Bob Dylan. “‘A Cherry, Cherry Christmas” contains a mix of new recordings, and re-worked originals such as ‘Deck the Halls’ and ‘Jingle Bell Rock’. But Neil takes another step forward and covers a second holiday – Hanukkah – something beyond Bob Dylan’s “A Christmas in the Heart”. The source of this new song? Adam Sandler’s tongue-in-cheek effort to sing about The Festival of Lights. Lyrically, it is bad, musically, it isn’t much better.
“Paul Newman’s half Jewish, Goldie Hawn’s half too
put them together, what a fine-looking Jew”
But, I am pretty certain this is supposed to be. After all, just how many Hanukkah songs are there? As Neil narrates at the beginning of the track, “There are so many beautiful Christmas songs around and so few Chanukah songs, so I thought we’d try this one for you”. Yes, he tried, and the effort looked tired. Maybe this will inspire other artist’s to make something better!

p.s. I’m rather wondering what “Cherry Cherry Christmas” is like. Maybe I don’t want to know.
