NYC in Winter

This is probably my most favorite Christmas song of popular culture. “Fairytale of New York” is an Irish folk ballad song by Anglo-Irish folk-rock group The Pogues, and features the British singer Kirsty MacColl. MacColl;s jovial vocals contrast sharply with the bleakness of Shane MacGowen’s – The Pogues lead singer and co-writer of the song.

Despite the derogatory descriptions, you’ve gotta love this song for it’s wit, and the fact that it is a Christmas song that doesn’t contain the all-too-common jingle of bells or mention of Santa. The song tells the reminiscences of a down and out drunk, and progresses to a quarrel between two lovers – which by the looks of it are soon to become ex-lovers.

“You scumbag you faggot, you cheap lousy maggot
Happy christmas your arse I pray God it´s our last.”

The song was briefly censored on BBC radio, because of the tirade of insults exchanged in the lyrics, the above being a prime example. However, because of an influx of listener complaints, the BBC backed down and played the original unedited version.

Love this one myself. Found a copy years ago after it was “covered” by MegaTokyo back in 2000: http://megatokyo.com/strip/58 Not sure if it’s actually on my iPod or not.

    Nice blog, BTW. Good idea.

Ha ha.. awesome! That’s a new one to me – a comic covering a song.

I’ve heard this song before, but not this version. I’m not sure which one I’ve heard, but I’ve always liked the sound of it.
