I try to avoid iconic songs on my blog, but sometimes, I just have to mention them… not that I can add any more words than what has already been discussed about this particular song. The image from yesterday’s post, although representing the first Sunday of Advent, brought today’s song to mind – Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind”. Written by songwriter Bernie Taupin (who has worked with Elton John on more than 30 albums), the song was originally released in 1973 on what is probably Elton John’s more famous album, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”. The song is a tribute to Marylin Monroe, who had passed away eleven years earlier.

In 1997, Elton re-released the single following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. He altered the lyrics to adapted to match the circumstances of Diana’s life. The 1997 single has become the best-selling single of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
