Sharon Shannon is an Irish musician, and her twist on traditional Irish style of music has to be heard… her debut album, released in 1991 has become Ireland’s best selling traditional-music album of all time. Sharon recently released her latest album, “Saints and Scoundrels”, the album coming together with an interesting mix of guest artists. One of the tracks on the album, “Go Tell The Devil” features Imelda May, whom I wrote about earlier this month. Are we allowed to list Imelda May as one of the scoundrels on this CD?
Go Tell The Devil was written by Imelda, and recorded in just a few hours with Sharon… (the first time Sharon heard the song was when Imelda sang it to her over the phone). Were it not for the traditional improvised Irish jig that appears in the middle of this song, the track would be just at home on Imelda’s own album, Love Tattoo. What we end up with is a compelling marriage of new and old – modernity and tradition.
