“Just don’t go back to Big Sur, Baby baby please don’t go”
The Thrills 2003 debut album, So Much For The City, is an unusual mix of solar-powered Californian Pop and thick Irish-stew style Indie-Rock. The reason for all the references to the sunshine of the West Coast, Conor Deasy (Lead singer of The Thrills) explains that they are there “as a way of escapism”. The band had recently been dropped by their record label, but rebounded to new heights with this album. It’s no coincidence that The Thrills had recently spent time in California, and the dramatic scenery and musical creativity must have influenced the band enormously. Santa Cruz, Big Sur, Hollywood, Las Vegas, deckchairs, sunshine – who wouldn’t want to escape to the West Coast lifestyle whilst listening to this collection of songs?
Which is what I did – spending my honeymoon around the Monterrey Bay region, taking in San Francisco, Pacific Grove, Carmel and a small portion of the famed Big Sur coastline. This CD found itself quickly into our rental car’s CD player shortly after driving out from the San Jose airport towards the coast.
