I couldn’t resist a second shout out for The Kinks “Village Green Preservation Society” album. Honestly, I could properly full a complete week of posts with tracks off of this album – it’s greatness is that good. Last of the Steam Powered Trains is, like yesterday’s track, a song full of nostalgia. Some say that Britain was built on Steam, and that the railway line ruled supreme, from the eighteenth century until the 1960’s. There are people that will sit quietly in a pub behind a pint of bitter and shed a tear at the mention of a steam locomotive.
You see, everybody in Britain must have a hobby. Some may play the ‘guess the spot of the football’ game and bet on the horses, some may collect stamps, coins, postcards or spoons, but the hobby most desired is to be a ’spotter’. To be a spotter, you need an anorak, a notepad, a flask of tea, and a pencil. You need to be prepared to drop everything at the mere mention of a sighting. You need patience. But most of all, you need to know what you are spotting. Anything is game – birds, Eddie Stobart lorries, buses, planes, celebrities, and, of course, trains.
Perhaps Train Spotting now has a new meaning in Britain, because this year, the first new steam locomotive for 50 years was built. The railway platforms across the country are going to be packed.
And for anybody interested in a special treat, “Picture Book” follows immediately after Steam Powered Trains on the above video. Happy listening!
