Jonathan Coulton is, by his own admission, a geek. His music is the prime example of his geekiness – he writes about Science Fiction, bacteria, computer code (My personal favorite is “Tom Cruise Crazzy”. Earlier this year, he realeased a live album – ‘Best. Concert. Ever”, which I discovered through a tweet of a friend o a friend). His songs are very similar in style to what Weird Al Yankovic would do – the level of intelligence and quirky humor, the catchy and memorable lyrics, they both have long hair and look like dorks.
“Shop Vac”, according to Coulton’s blog is a Fountain of Wayne parody – every note and word blasting out the power pop vibe. Coulton recorded this song during a project that he called “Thing a Week” – where he wrote and recorded one song every week, proving that a lyric can form from any situation possible.
“If you need me
I’ll be downstairs
With the shop vac
You can call but I probably won’t hear you
Because it’s loud with the shop vac on”
If you enjoy what you hear, then a good percentage of his work (including this song and Tom Cruise Crazy) are available for free by visiting his website – www.jonathancoulton.com.
