It’s time to showcase some new artists that I’ve recently discovered. The Avett Brothers recently hit the glare of the mainstream spotlight after several years of playing in front of a small but dedicated fanbase. They brought with them music rich in tradition and diverse in genre – bluegrass, folk, country, ragtime – it is hard to categorize this band’s sound. The Avett Brothers were not phased by the launch into mass media, as this song shows, which is taken off of their latest album, released last month. I and Love and You is the title track to a collection of folk-ballads written by the the Avett Brothers (the band consists of brothers Seth and Scott, accompanied by Bob Crawford on stand-up bass. A fouth member, Joe Kwon often joins the band on tour, playing the cello. I’ve had a couple of reports that the Avett Brothers are even better live than they are in the studio, so if you have the opportunity to go to one of their shows, go!
It is this mixture of instruments that I find very appealing – a step back from the more standard electric this and electric that of much of today’s three or four member-band. It is a breath of fresh air. Read on, and take a listen to the full album yourself.
