Anyone Can Play Guitar was Radiohead’s second single, and the first to show a modest amount of success in the charts. For an unknown reason, this song became stuck in my head the other day, and I sttill haven’t shaken it out of there, the reason why it appears in front of your eyes today. It must be the anthemic chorus.
“And if the world does turn
And if London burns I’ll be standing on the beach with my guitar
I wanna be in a band when I get to heaven
Anyone can play guitar”
When I was at Uni, I had a part-time job at the local Supermarket… well, it wasn’t so ‘local’ – I lived about two or three miles away! Being a student, I had no car, only my bicycle so I would cycle to my job on the occasions when I couldn’t beg a ride from anyone, which wasn’t very often. I forgot to mention that I started work at 6AM on a Saturday morning! Anyway, I used to plug my ears into my Sony Walkman (this was an era before the iPod), click the play button and listen to the mechanical whirrings as my tape started. Often, I would listen to The Rolling Stones, or The Who, but occasionally Radiohead was the preference, especially when I really needed to wake up.
