It’s been raining pretty much all week, and I can’t get this song out of my head. “Bus Stop’ by the squeaky clean Hollies is a great Summer time song, and sounds as fresh today as it did 40 years ago at the height of the British Invasion. Luckily, I don’t ride the bus to work, because if I did, my fellow passengers would think I was a nut! Which reminds me (not the nutty part), almost every time I drive through Syracuse with my wife, she comments on the ’strange’ people hanging out on the street (’strange’ isn’t the exact word she uses). Almost every time I remind her that they are waiting there because that is where the bus stop is, and that they are strange because that is what strange people do – ride the bus. This, we agree on.
Was the bus stop the place to pick up girls in 1966? Bus stops are certainly not romantic hotbeds nowadays. They’re rather depressing places to wait at, especially if your bus is late, which is the norm. If you are waiting on your own, you grudgingly count the number of cars that pass as you feel more and more certain that today was the day the buses went on strike. If you are in the company of someone you know, it’s an almost guarantee there will be a very odd person also at the bus stop, restricting any conversation. But, maybe, there is a light at the end of all this gloom. Your money that you pour into public transportation is slowly finding it’s way back to the street. Happiness and joy, sunshine and warmth may once again return to the bus stop. Check these cool bus stops from around the World.
