This track was intended to feature on Coldplay recent “Viva La Vida” album, but Coldplay decided against it, turning to a shorter instrumental version. They didn’t want such a stand out track on their album… don’t ask me why. Instead, this was released as a single and the video featured the debut of the Coldplay Puppets. Not suprisingly, the puppets are slightly more animated and life-like than the real band. (Sorry, Chris Martin, but we all think you are a bit koooky.)
I like this song, as I do the majority of Coldplay’s material – but I don’t like the video. I don’t like how the band have iconized themselves. Take a closer look – do those puppets look to be enjoying playing in front of an audience of children at a church tea party? Do you see an evilness behind puppet-Chris’ eyes? Why oh why are Coldplay portraying themselves as puppets! Is this an admission that they are puppets of the music industry? Seems a little ironic to me. I’ve also noticed the puppets have taken on a world tour (most recently in London), taking the place of the band in a shameless bid for self promotion.

Something about this video reminded me of 33 1/3 Revolutions per Monkee.

That is totally bizarre. Almost, but not quite as bizarre as the Help! movie by The Beatles. But not quite as bizarre as The Bee Gees ‘Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band’ movie – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078239/
