The sun is up
The sky is blue
It’s beautiful
And so are you
Gentlemen, take note of those lyrics – you may want to use them when you write your next letter or sign your next greetings card to your sweetheart. There is a good chance that they will not connect the words to this underrated song by The Beatles, and a better chance that they are not a reader of A Track A Day!
There are a couple of interesting stories about this song. The first is that Ringo Starr was not a part of this recording – he had walked out of the band during parts of the Beatles White Album recordings – in his place, Paul McCartney plays drums. The second, is that “Dear Prudence” was written during The Beatles visit to the Maharishi in India, as part of a ‘celebrity spiritual retreat’. Prudence, another of the visitors, was dedicated to her meditations (much to The Beatles dismay it seems), and remained in her room the majority of the time. Worried that Prudence was becoming too crazy or depressed John Lennon wrote this song to cheer her up. I think it did.
