“Help!” – the title song to The Beatles second movie adventure and also to their fifth UK album. This music video was used in the title sequence of the movie – which centers around the attempts of a cult group to retrieve a sacrificial ring. (Hence the zoom in to the ring during the initial scene of this video). The movie is pretty surreal with Pythonesque humor, and is satirical of the Bond films popular in the 60’s. The single “Help!” was written primarily by John Lennon but credited as a Lennon/McCartney song, and was released in July 1965. Unbeknown at the time, perhaps because of all the silliness surrounding the movie release, it is describing Lennon’s personal feelings (he was suffering from depressions and anxiety when writing this), and is one of of The Beatles songs that he was most proud of.

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like I’ve never done before.

This is probably one of the first songs by The Beatles that contained deeper meanings, and portrayed the emotions being felt by the band members. It was a change in direction from their earlier work which sang out about simple boy-girl love songs and steered them towards releases such as “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver”.
