Here is another track penned by George Harrison, this one taking a much slower pace than my previous featuring Old Brown Shoe. The more relaxed and dreamlike pace of this song is a reflection on the influence of The Byrds music (compate this song to “Bells of Rhymney”)
Funnily enough, this was to be Harrison’s first chart success, but not as a result of a Beatles record. The Hollies covered “If I Needed Someone” as a single – at the same time that The Beatles released this on their “Rubber Soul” album. It is well known that Harrison didn’t care much for The Hollies version of his song and this let to added tension and rivalry between the two groups. (I just listened to The Hollies cover and I have to side with George, it’s terrible).
The only negative comment I have for this song is that it is a tad slow – I wonder how it would sound with a slightly faster tempo? Whenever I get this song stuck in my head it flies around in there at a faster beat than the actual song does, which throws me off when I listen to the actual song! I found a live version of this song which seemed to be even slower than the original!
Beatles Week is continuing, so check back tomorrow! If you can’t wait, I have other posts related to The Beatles or George Harrison.
