September is fast approaching, which can only mean apple season in Upstate New York is just around the corner. Apple picking, Apple music, The Beatles, George Harrison, Apple Scruffs! This is a fun, poptastic record, released on Harrison’s hugely popular album, All Things Must Pass. With his limited writing privelages on Beatle’s records, Harrison had built up quite an impressive set of songs by the time The Beatles dispanded in 1967. This track was released three years later in 1970 – but what are Apple Scruffs?
Until I wrote this post, I’ve never looked up what ‘Apple Scruffs’ are. I thought maybe it was some kind of desert – some kind of Apple Crumble concoction? English people have a funny way of naming their dishes – Mushy Peas, Spotted Dick, Toad in the Hole, so Apple Scruffs fits that naming code. However, I was a long way away from the truth. The Apple Scruffs were a name given to a group of obsessed Beatle-Maniacs (mainly female) that hung around the Apple Corps building and the Abbey Road recording studio in the hope of meeting or seeing their heroes, and when doing so, screaming, very loudly. The Beatles always had a good rapport with these fans, enough to inspire other songs – Paul McCartney’s “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window” is an example
