The following video is from the 1970 Isle of Wight festival (I think, I wasn’t there at the time!) You’ve gotta love Entwistle’s skeleton suit!

Ok – so atrackaday doesn’t post entries every single day, but don’t use that as an excuse not to listen to some music! It’s hot hot hot out there today – go and enjoy the weather (though I’d advise on restricting your time outside at the risk of slowly braising yourself)!

This cover of a 1958 Eddie Cochran B side is my favorite track from the Who’s Live at Leeds album, released in 1970.  On a day like today it has the right to be played at full volume wherever you are.  It features Roger Daltrey on lead vocals with the low growl of John Entwistle singing the parts of the background characters in the song.  (Another favorite track that features the same low voice is ‘Boris the Spider’ – I am sure I will one day cover it, it is creepingly captivating!)

The context of the song covers the trials of teenage life – having to spend the long Summer hours working to earn money so as to enjoy the Summer, and the protests over the voting age - in the 50’s the voting age was 21.

Well I went to my congressman
He said, quote: “I’d like to help you son,
But you’re too young to vote.”

Sometimes I wonder what am I gonna do
‘Cause there ain’t no cure for the summertime blues

Thanks for putting this up. Always loved this song, but I do love The Who cover of this too..
I’ve not actually seen this video you’ve put up too. (I’ve tended to watch later videos of The Who doing this one, but this is a great video).

Hi Trace, thanks for the comment! I caught a documentary about The Who (Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who) on TV a few month’s ago that featured a lot of early footage – check it out sometime if you get the chance.
