Flipping on my last.fm station this morning I was greeted to It’s My Life from The Animals. It’s My Life is not only one of my favorite tracks by the Animals but it’s also one of my most loved tracks from the British Invasion Era. This was released in 1965 and featured on the 1966 album ‘The Best of the Animals’. The lead singer of The Animals, Eric Burdon
Although I am not a fan of artists acquiring their music from external sources (this track was written exclusively for The Animals by professional songwriters Roger Atkins and Carl D’Errico) I think I can make some exceptions. With two other stellar Animals tracks being penned by this duo – ‘We Gotta Get Out of This Place’ and ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ I think you’ll agree they did a job well done. Also, bear in mind the quantity of material The Animals released between 1964 and 1966 – Six US Albums (though one was a Best-of) and thirteen US single.
It’s My Life was a top 10 hit in the UK but didn’t fare as well in the US, reaching #23 in late 1965. I don’t know why this was so – the lyrics transplant themselves well into any culture, and Eric Burdon’s distinct vocals lend themselves well to the words.
- It’s a hard world, to get a break in -
- All the good things have been taken
- But girl there are ways to make certain things pay,
- Though I’m dressed in these rags
- I’ll wear sable, some day
